Ask any self respecting music fan to sum up Fall Out Boy in ten words and it’s likely the response won’t be “Best pop rock band of a generation, emo or not!” More predictably you’ll often get back: “Bassist’s phallus posted on the internet. The music is irrelevant.” Maybe though with the imminent release of their Best Of compilation Believers Never Die it’s time for the haters to make a reassessment….

Anyone who caught a whiff of Brand New’s debut single Jude Law And A Semester Abroad in 2003 probably wouldn’t have been making any bets on career longevity. Dumped in the midst of the emo vanguard Fall Out Boy held a lower ratio of optimism to self loathing and My Chemical Romance had better haircuts. In other words they seemed destined for history’s bargain bin.
