Brand New @ Wembley Arena – 23/01/10

It would be safe to say the ‘arena rock jacket’ isn’t one that Brand New wear in comfort. At the nub of their cult appeal is the disarming sense of intimacy frontman Jesse Lacey strikes up with his listenership.
Instead of swelling hearts with simple sing-alongs, he pours out his own in five minute soliloquies. Instead of reigning back his band to their emo-pop roots, their latest latest album Daisy forged a troubled mesh of clattering art-punk riffs and raucous vocals. Where better then to take the only UK date of their most recent world tour than the 12,500 capacity Wembley Arena in London.

Emo was sooooo 2006 right? Well two survivors from that short-lived scene don’t seem to think so. Paramore release brand new eyes with the intention of becoming the planet’s next big pop-punk band and Brand New have their eyes on the alt-rock elite with fourth LP Daisy. Time for an unnecessary face off that demeans all parties involved.

Anyone who caught a whiff of Brand New’s debut single Jude Law And A Semester Abroad in 2003 probably wouldn’t have been making any bets on career longevity. Dumped in the midst of the emo vanguard Fall Out Boy held a lower ratio of optimism to self loathing and My Chemical Romance had better haircuts. In other words they seemed destined for history’s bargain bin.
