Tomboy – Panda Bear
11:53 pm on 11 July, 2010

Hometown: Baltimore, Maryland, USA
Sounds Like: Animal Collective, The Beach Boys, Brian Eno
Released: 13 July 2010
Remember Animal Collective? Well Panda Bear is the solo project from that New York four piece’s founding member and if you thought his original band was “out there” then you ain’t heard nothing yet.
‘Tomboy’ is the title track from the follow-up to 2007’s critically adored Person Pitch and as such carries the same minimalist streak and layered vocals that are eerily reminiscent of Brian Wilson.
It certainly isn’t a UK Number 1 single in the offing but give this first cut from Tomboy a couple of spins and we guarantee it will reward your patience.

This is an especially pertinent issue as Afro-pop poster boys Vampire Weekend seek to grab a debut UK number 1 album with the release of their sophomore record Contra next week.
Big In The Tenties?
11:37 am on 4 January, 2010

Seeing as the title of ‘slang term for the new decade’ is still up for grabs, we thought we’d get to that party so early we’re still wearing off the effects of the new year. In this spirit of dangerous hyperbole we decided to dig out our old Magic 8 Ball to see what the future holds for some of the most prominent acts and artists of the noughties.

Sometimes I think we’re just too damn good to you at The Counterfit. Essays, social life and personal sanity be damned, we’ll plunge ahead with our end of year compendiums regardless. Not content with spoon-feeding our adoring public the best tracks of the year, this time we’ve even gone to the trouble of collating them all together in one handy Spotify playlist. Don’t click yet though, you wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise…
