Try as we might to skip over the patently disgusting sanitary conditions that forced the Kings Of Leon had to cancel a gig due to a hefty bird infestation, the resulting NME.com headline “Kings Of Leon abandon gig after pigeon ‘shits in bassist’s mouth’” was just too much to bear. The shameless consistency of genre-ticking in the Barclaycard Mercury Prize nominations are as much a part of it as the complete unpredictability of the final result. An award that’s eluded the likes of Radiohead, Muse and New Order but thrown gongs to Ms Dynamite, Speech Debelle and a tabla player, it’s an undeniable miracle that the event is still treated with such reverence.
